Most husky tours in Tromsø include a thermal suit and the transfer from town, but the part you came for differs a lot. Actual time on the sled ranges from about 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the tour. That is why our verdict rests on a few facts you can check on every listing.
Time on the sled
Arctic Adventure Tours states 70–80 minutes of driving, the longest official figure in town. Fun & Easy runs to about an hour according to reviews, the entry-price tour at Breivikeidet up to 30 minutes, and in the Tamok valley reviewers report 15 to 20 minutes per person on the shared sled. Our self-drive comparison lists the time for each tour.
Drive yourself or ride along
On a self-drive tour two people share a sled and swap between driving and sitting. On the passenger sled a musher drives and you sit wrapped up, which suits young children, anyone who would rather not steer, and photographers. Sitting still, you feel the cold sooner, so dress warmly. Self-drive or passenger compared.
Minimum age
Age limits rule out more tours than any other factor for families. The passenger sled and the evening camp visit at Villmarkssenter take all ages, Breivikeidet starts at 4, Arctic Adventure Tours at 7, while the self-drive tour at Villmarkssenter, the advanced tour and the all-in-one evening at Camp Tamok start at 16. Husky tours with kids.
Snow, light and transfer
The season runs from 15 November to 30 April. Near the coast snow can be thin early and late in the season, while the Tamok valley inland stays white; the price is a bus ride of about 95 minutes each way. Camps on Kvaløya and at Breivikeidet are closer to town. Morning tours have the most daylight, afternoon tours in deep winter run in darkness. Best time for husky sledding.
Evenings and northern lights
The evening camp visit with dinner at Villmarkssenter includes no sled ride; you meet the dogs and, on clear nights, look for the northern lights. The all-in-one evening at Camp Tamok adds a short self-drive ride and an aurora search by snowmobile, from age 16. Aurora husky evening.
