Husky sledding in Tromsø: drive your own team or ride along

The current price of every tour is in the comparison table on this page. In winter, the cheapest option is the evening husky camp visit with dinner, which includes no sled ride. Self-drive sledding starts with the two Breivikeidet tours. At the top of the ladder sit the private tour at OffTrack Experience and the all-in-one night at Camp Tamok with a snowmobile; among the half-day tours, the Moa Hundseid premium tour bundles in the most, with a warm meal, loaned winter clothing and hotel pickup.

It varies far more than the prices do, and on most tours it is well under an hour. The Breivikeidet self-drive caps sledding at about 30 minutes (two runs of 10–15 minutes with a driver swap), and in the Tamok valley reviewers report roughly 15–20 minutes of driving per person. The big exception is the Arctic Adventure Tours self-drive with 70–80 minutes on the sled, the longest official figure in Tromsø. The Best Arctic tour to Harkin Husky Farm lists 45–60 minutes, and reviewers of the Moa Hundseid premium tour describe about the same, though that operator publishes no figure. Two reviewers of the advanced tour at Camp Tamok report around 1.5 hours, again without an official number. The rest of every excursion is the transfer, thermal gear, safety briefing and time with the dogs. If a long ride matters to you, check this number before booking.

Self-drive means you stand on the runners and steer your own team, two people per sled with a driver swap halfway. It is active and physical, and most adults choose it. The winter sledding season runs from 15 November to 30 April. In autumn (from September) some kennels run husky cart tours on wheels instead of sleds. Within the winter season, November and April can be short on snow near the coast. The inland Tamok valley, about 95 minutes away by bus, is the snow-sure alternative.

Yes, more than most people expect. During the polar night (roughly late November to mid-January) the sun does not rise at all; midday tours get the most twilight, and afternoon departures run in darkness. Reviewers also note that afternoon rides can feel shorter. If seeing the landscape matters, book the morning or midday slot.

Thermal suits are included on these tours, and so is the transfer from Tromsø on all but the private OffTrack tour, which takes the edge off. Still: you are outside for hours in Arctic winter, and sitting in a passenger sled is colder than driving. Wear warm layers under the thermal suit: wool base layers, warm socks, a hat and your own gloves.

On an evening tour, sometimes. The camps lie away from the city lights, so on a clear night with solar activity your chances are real. But no operator can promise aurora. The evening camp visit with dinner is the natural pick if the lights are part of your plan, but it includes no sled ride. If you want to drive a team as well, the all-in-one night at Camp Tamok combines a short sled ride with an aurora search by snowmobile, from age 16.

The established Tromsø kennels are working sled-dog operations, not petting zoos. Tromsø Villmarkssenter, for example, keeps around 200 huskies and grew out of Iditarod racing.
