Every self-drive tour in Tromsø works the same way: two people share a sled, one drives standing on the runners while the other rides, and you swap partway. What separates the tours is the part few listings spell out (how long you are actually on the sled) plus price, meals and snow reliability. Here is that number for every tour, review-sourced figures marked as such.

Each of these tours stands out on one point. All tours on this page follow further down.
The only tour with 70 to 80 minutes on the sled written into the listing. You share the sled with one other person and swap at several stops, so both of you get a long turn at driving.
Drive your own team at one of the lowest prices in this comparison, with a full meal included. The catch is time: each of you drives for about 10 to 15 minutes.
A warm meal, winter clothing on loan and pickup at the Radisson Blu in the centre are all included. Reviewers describe 45 to 60 minutes on the sled; the operator gives no figure.
Runs inland in the Tamok valley, which is colder and more reliable for snow than the camps near the coast. A full day, with about 95 minutes on the bus each way.
Every option side by side, with the same facts for each. Open a card for the full tour details.
The longest official ride time in Tromsø: 70–80 minutes on the sled, and the most-reviewed husky tour in town.
This is the tour most people picture when they think of dog sledding in Tromsø: you stand on the runners yourself, one hand on the brake, and drive your own team of huskies through the Arctic landscape. Sleds carry two people: one drives while the other rides, and you swap halfway so both get a turn at mushing.
What sets this Arctic Adventure Tours trip apart is trail time: 70–80 minutes on the sled, when most Tromsø husky tours give you 45 minutes or less. If maximising actual sledding is your priority, this is the tour to book. It is also the most-reviewed self-drive tour in Tromsø.
Meeting point in central Tromsø at the Scandic Ishavshotel; from there you travel to the kennel on Kvaløya.

Mid-priced self-drive in front of the Lyngen Alps, open from age 7.
A compact self-drive tour by Destination Tromsø sitting between the Breivikeidet entry price and the premium lunch tours: you drive your own team, two per sled with the usual swap, in front of the Lyngen Alps scenery. Of the 4.5-hour excursion, around 2.5 hours are spent at the camp.
It is one of the most consistently rated husky products in Tromsø. With a minimum age of 7, it is also one of the more family-friendly self-drive options.

Self-drive plus a traditional lunch at the big Kvaløya camp, 25 minutes from town.
The Villmarkssenter (Wilderness Centre) on Kvaløya island is Tromsø's best-known husky operation: a camp of roughly 200 Alaskan huskies about 25 minutes from the city, founded by a family with real Iditarod racing history. This tour combines the self-drive sled ride with a traditional lunch afterwards, which is why many reviewers call it the most complete half-day at the camp.
After the ride you get time with the dogs at the kennel. Depending on the season, that can include puppies.

The snow-sure inland option: about 95 minutes by bus each way.
Tromsø sits on the coast, and coastal snow is moody: in November and April the camps close to the city can run thin. The Tamok valley is the fix: an inland mountain valley where winters are colder and the snow arrives earlier and stays longer. The bus from Tromsø takes about 95 minutes each way, and of the 7-hour excursion you spend around 3.5 hours in the valley, split into two groups that take turns on the 7 km sled trail.
The trade-off is the transfer: you spend more of your day on the road than with the Kvaløya camps 25 minutes out. In the shoulder weeks of the season, that trade is usually worth it.

The cheapest way onto the runners, full meal included; sledding capped at ~30 minutes.
If you want to drive a dog team yourself but the price tags of the bigger tours give you pause, this is the tour to look at first: the same self-drive format (two people per sled, swapping driver between legs) at the lowest price point in our comparison, run by Destination Tromsø from a base at Breivikeidet outside Tromsø. A full meal is included.
The rating tells you the saving does not come out of the experience: it sits among the best-rated self-drive tours in this comparison.

The Breivikeidet camp again, with 30 to 40 minutes on the sled in the listing and a snack instead of a meal. From age 4.
A second way to the Breivikeidet camp, about an hour by bus from Tromsø. You get a short introduction, then drive your own team in pairs on a 3 to 4 km trail and swap places halfway. The listing puts the ride at 30 to 40 minutes, depending on weather and snow, and stops for photos along the way.
Back at the camp there are hot drinks and a traditional Norwegian snack. The day is short and suits a morning or an afternoon, and children from age 4 can come along.

The long ride in the snow-sure Tamok valley: two reviewers report around 1.5 hours on the sled. From age 16, fitness required.
The second way into the Tamok valley, aimed at people who found the standard tour's short ride too little. You drive in pairs and swap halfway, as everywhere in Tromsø, but the trail time is far longer: the listing gives no official figure, and two reviewers from March describe about 1.5 hours on the sled. After the run there is a warm stew by the fire in a lavvu.
The tour asks more of you. The listing says it needs strength and fitness from every guest: you push the sled on snowy climbs and keep your balance in sharp bends, and the guides can refuse anyone who does not meet that for safety reasons. Children under 16 cannot join.

Meal, loaned winter clothing and hotel pickup in one price. Reviewers report 45–60 minutes on the sled.
The top-priced self-drive tour in this comparison, and the price buys completeness: Moa Hundseid Expedition includes a warm meal, full winter clothing on loan and hotel pickup in central Tromsø. You show up in normal winter clothes and everything else is handled. The kennel sits on Kvaløya, about 40 minutes from town, so roughly 3 of the 4.5 hours are actually spent with the dogs.
The operator does not publish an official sledding time; recent reviewers describe roughly 45 to 60 minutes on the sled, which, if it holds for your departure, is among the longer rides in Tromsø. Treat it as a review impression, not a guarantee.

A smaller camp on the Balsfjord, an hour by bus: about 30 minutes on the sled, coffee and cinnamon cake, from age 12.
Camp Aspemo lies at Mestervik on the Balsfjord, about an hour by bus south of Tromsø. You ride in pairs: one drives standing on the runners, the other sits in the sled, and you swap halfway along the 3 to 4 km trail. The listing gives about 30 minutes for the ride.
Afterwards there is coffee, tea and Norwegian cinnamon cake in the cabin. Departures run from 8 in the morning to the early afternoon, so the tour fits into a half day. The season is given as 1 November to 7 April.

45–60 minutes of driving written into the listing, hot soup at the farm, about 1.5 hours by coach each way.
A full day out to Harkin Husky Farm, run by Best Arctic. The coach ride takes about 1.5 hours each way, which is the price for the trail time: the listing puts 45 to 60 minutes of self-drive sledding into its inclusions, more than most tours in Tromsø commit to in writing. You drive in pairs, one on the runners and one in the sled, and swap along the way.
One reviewer from April timed the run at about 40 minutes, and another noted a shorter ride when the spring snow was going soft. Back at the farm there is hot soup with coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

A short self-drive sled ride, a two-course dinner and an aurora search by snowmobile in one evening. From age 16.
A long evening in the Tamok valley, about 1.5 hours inland from Tromsø, that puts three things into one trip. First the dogs: after a briefing you drive a team in pairs. The listing does not say how long the sled ride lasts and calls it a taste of dog sledding, so expect a shorter ride than on the day tours. Then a two-course dinner at the camp, and after it the guide explains the science of the northern lights before the group sets off by snowmobile, two per machine, taking turns to drive and stopping to watch the sky.
The aurora is not guaranteed, and the tour runs whatever the sky does. Portraits taken during the evening are shared about two days later. It is a demanding night out: from age 16, minimum height 130 cm, maximum weight 120 kg, and good fitness is required.

Your own guide and team at a small farm near Bardufoss. Drive or ride; the journey from Tromsø is not included.
The one private husky tour in this comparison, and the one furthest from town. OffTrack Experience is a small family-run kennel at Øverbygd in Målselv, a little over two hours south-east of Tromsø. You either drive there yourself or take the bus to Bardufoss, where the kennel collects you at the stop. Either way the journey is yours to arrange and pay for; the price covers the time at the farm.
There you get a guide and a sled team to yourselves. You can drive, take turns or sit in the sled while someone else drives, which lets families and mixed groups go out together. The route takes about 2.5 hours with a photo stop and reindeer soup by the fire, and the dogs live at the farm, about 35 Alaskan huskies in teams of five to eight.
At the husky farm (Evenmoveien 158, 9334 Øverbygd) if you drive yourself, or at a bus stop near Bardufoss, where the kennel picks you up

From the GetYourGuide listings, checked in October 2026. The length of the whole trip is the operator's figure.
Price and ride length do not move together, as the two columns in the table above show. The Breivikeidet tour is the cheapest of them and caps sledding at about 30 minutes, but includes a full meal. The Arctic Adventure Tours ride costs a little more and gives you 70–80 minutes on the sled, the longest official figure in Tromsø. The tours further out also run long, each with about 90 minutes on the bus in each direction: Best Arctic writes 45–60 minutes of driving into its listing for Harkin Husky Farm, and two reviewers of the advanced tour at Camp Tamok describe around 1.5 hours on the sled. The private tour at OffTrack Experience, a little over two hours from town, gives no ride time but spends about 2.5 hours on the route with a photo stop and lunch; you arrange the journey there yourself. Among the half-day tours, the Moa Hundseid premium tour costs the most and is about completeness rather than trail time: meal, loaned winter clothing and hotel pickup are all in the price, with reviewers describing 45–60 minutes of sledding.
You share the sled and swap driver and passenger partway. On a 30-minute ride that means 10–15 minutes with your hands on the handlebar; on the 70–80-minute Arctic Adventure Tours ride, about 35–40 minutes. If mushing is the point of your trip, this is the number to compare, not the total excursion length (4 to 7 hours on most tours once transfer, thermal suits, briefing and dog time are counted).
On most tours it takes attention, balance and a bit of nerve, not athleticism. The advanced Camp Tamok tour is the exception: its listing asks every guest for strength and fitness. You get a briefing, the guides set the trail, and the dogs know it better than you do. You stand on the runners, shift your weight in curves and use the foot brake downhill. One physical caveat from the Moa Hundseid reviews: there can be short uphill stretches where you run beside the sled and push. If anyone in your group would rather skip all of that, the passenger sled is the better choice: a musher drives and you ride.
From late November to mid-January Tromsø is in polar night. Morning and midday departures run in blue twilight, bright enough to see the landscape you are driving through. Afternoon departures run in darkness. For a self-drive tour, where watching the trail is half the experience, that matters more than for any other format; the trade-offs are on our morning vs. afternoon page.
Ride length comes up in almost every review. Three examples, practical caveats included.
“The dog sled tour lasted about 90 minutes. … During the ride, we were able to change drivers 2–3 times. After the tour, we had hot chocolate and cake …”
“We rode on the sleigh through stunning scenery for over an hour. Several stops were made, where we could swap places.”
“The minibus picks you up from the centre of Tromso, and takes around 45 minutes. You then are able to borrow snow gear at the camp … The dog sled experience itself was wonderful, and last around 45 minutes, with a number of stops to let you swap driving/passenger. Be warned: you do need a level of fitness as there is a short period of running uphill whilst pushing the sled!”
Reviews by travellers after their husky tour, from GetYourGuide.
Roughly half the sledding time, because two people share the sled and swap driver and passenger partway. Sledding time itself ranges from 15–20 minutes per person in the Tamok valley (a reviewers' figure) and a 30-minute cap at Breivikeidet up to 70–80 minutes with Arctic Adventure Tours, the longest official figure in Tromsø. Two reviewers of the advanced Camp Tamok tour describe around 1.5 hours, but that listing gives no number, and neither do the evening tour at Camp Tamok and the private tour at OffTrack Experience.
The Breivikeidet self-drive by Destination Tromsø, which also includes a full meal. The current price is in the table on this page. The trade-off is trail time: sledding is capped at about 30 minutes, split into two runs of 10–15 minutes.
Manageable for most people: you stand on the runners, balance, and brake with your foot. Some tours have short uphill sections where you run beside the sled and push; Moa Hundseid reviewers mention needing a basic level of fitness for exactly that. The Arctic Adventure Tours listing excludes pregnant travellers, people with back problems and those with low fitness. The advanced Camp Tamok tour asks the most: everyone helps push the sled on snowy climbs.
On the Fun & Easy, Tamok Valley and Arctic Adventure Tours trips, children from age 7 can ride in the sled while an adult drives. The Breivikeidet tour with transfer is open from age 4. The advanced Camp Tamok tour and the all-in-one night are for ages 16 and up, and Best Arctic and Camp Aspemo do not take children under 12. For the remaining self-drive tours no minimum age is published on the listing, so check the product page or ask the operator before booking with children.
Every tour here includes thermal outer gear, all except the private OffTrack tour include the transfer from Tromsø, and all offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. Meals differ: Breivikeidet, the Villmarkssenter tour and Moa Hundseid include a full meal, the advanced Tamok tour a warm stew, Best Arctic a hot soup, OffTrack a reindeer soup by the fire and the all-in-one night a two-course dinner; Moa Hundseid additionally lends complete winter clothing and picks up at the Radisson Blu in central Tromsø.
